Sunshine is Good Medicine

The Healing Power of Sunshine—Balance Is Key

As a skin aesthetics laser doctor, my recent blog emphasized the importance of sunscreen to prevent photoaging. And, while protection is essential, we shouldn’t overlook the powerful, whole-body benefits of sunlight. The key is balance: protect what needs protecting, and allow sensible exposure where benefits outweigh risks. Enjoy the sun wisely—your skin, body, mind and spirit will thank you.

Body and Soul Benefits

This truly is the time of the year to “soak it up” at the same time you are protecting your face and other areas of photo aging concern. Controlled sun exposure—especially to the trunk and limbs—supports

  • vitamin D synthesis (critical for bone health),
  • immune function, and even
  • cancer prevention.

Just 10–20 minutes of midday sun a few times a week can make a difference. Beyond the physical benefits, sunlight boosts serotonin, improving mood, energy, and even sleep by helping regulate circadian rhythms.

The Importance of Sunscreen Protection

We all love the beach, the pool, and the lake and in all of those places you get a double dose of sun because it is reflected off the water or sand. Be sure to protect all areas with sunscreen when you are in these conditions, and re-apply after 90 minutes of exposure. The face and chest are especially prone to sun damage and aging, making daily sunscreen use vital in those areas. And those of you who are working in front of computer screens are also at risk for increasing pigment in facial skin from the electromagnetic radiation released by the screen.

I recommend EWG (Environmental Working Group)–approved mineral sunscreens, which avoid harmful chemicals while offering strong protection. To get the recommended 45 or 50 SPF strength and broad spectrum of sunscreen with safe ingredients, you are limited to zinc oxide and titanium dioxide based mineral sunscreens. Sunscreens with greater than 50 SPF sometimes have multiple chemicals within them which have various levels of toxicities. Recently, the EWG has created a list of their completely verified safe, effective, and environmentally friendly recommended sunscreens. I have gone through their list of 116 products and you will find my top 15 recommendations in the appendix below.

Best wishes and blessings for a great summer!
